Many of our community members have complex needs, and traditional office-based therapy doesn't always work. The Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) has helped us to provide treatment services to the community in creative and innovative ways. There have been some important changes to this Act since being enacted into law by California voters. In March 2024 legislations underwent a significant overhaul of the state's approach to mental health and substance abuse services, with a particular emphasis on changes to funding. Prop 1 reallocates existing state funds, including a portion of revenue from MHSA and other state resources, to expand and modernize the state's behavioral health infrastructure. This includes increased funding for treatment facilities, supportive housing for individuals experiencing homelessness, and other essential services. The goal is to use resources more efficiently, address the most pressing needs, and create a more effective and sustainable behavioral health system for all Californians.
