Mental Health Court

Mental Health Court

For some defendants charged with nonviolent offenses or, in some cases, charged with felonies, the behavior or problem is more a product of mental illness than of criminality.

Offered to consumers that the District Attorney deems eligible and the Mental Health branch finds suitable, Mental Health Court (MHC) provides mental health treatment as an alternative to jail. This determination is based on crimes committed, mental health diagnosis, and current functioning.

The program provides courts with resources to improve participants’ social functioning and link them to employment, housing, treatment, and support services.
