The Mental Health Services Family Advocate provides assistance to the family members of consumers. The primary role of the family advocate is to guide family caregivers who are having trouble navigating the mental health services available in Tulare County.

The following are some of the services that the Family Advocate may provide:

  • Encourage family members to share important information with treatment, crisis, emergency, and law enforcement staff.
  • Answer questions about services.
  • Help families to exercise the rights they have and to understand confidentiality limitations.
  • Supply written resources and refer family members to support, such as NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness).
  • Advocate for families as a group and assist with communication with service providers.
  • Listen to the frustrations faced when family members cannot talk to service providers.
  • Provide feedback and guide family members toward active self-care and stress management.

The Family Advocate cannot take the place of family caregivers nor tell them what they should do. But the advocate is available to help clear up complaints and help family members maintain their hope for recovery.

See the Contact and Location tab to get in touch with the Family Advocate Manager.
